What tribe was Yeshua from?

Yeshua (also known as Jesus) being from the tribe of Judah, one of the 12 tribes of Israel, is an exciting part of His identity and mission. The Bible gives us plenty of clues that show just how special His connection to Judah is. In Hebrews 7:14, it says, “It is clear that our Master descended from Judah...” This makes it clear that Yeshua was born into the same tribe as King David and his family. The tribe of Judah was famous for producing kings, and Yeshua’s place in this royal family tree was key to His role as the promised Messiah.

The Old Testament also contains some amazing prophecies about our Messiah coming from Judah. One of these is found in Micah 5:2, where it says, “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” Bethlehem, a small town in Judah, was where Yeshua was born, showing that God’s plan was at work long before He arrived.

In Revelation 5:5, Yeshua is given the title “Lion of the Tribe of Judah.” Lions are symbols of strength, authority, and leadership—perfectly fitting for Yeshua, who came as the ultimate ruler and Savior. The genealogies in Matthew 1:1-16 and Luke 3:23-38 trace Yeshua’s ancestry back to King David, showing His descent from Judah. This fulfills the prophecy that the Messiah would come from David’s family line, solidifying Yeshua’s rightful claim to the throne of Israel.
