What tribe of Israel was Yeshua from?

Yeshua (יֵשׁוּעַ, pronounced Yeh-SHOO-ah) was from the tribe of Judah (יְהוּדָה, pronounced Yeh-hoo-DAH), one of the 12 tribes of Israel. This is an important part of His identity and mission. The Bible tells us, “It is clear that our Master descended from Judah...” (Hebrews 7:14). This means Yeshua was born into the same tribe as King David and his family. The tribe of Judah was famous for producing kings, and Yeshua’s place in this royal family line was key to His role as the promised Messiah.

Messianic Prophecies

The Old Testament also contains powerful prophecies about the Messiah coming from Judah. One of them is found in Micah 5:2: “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” Bethlehem, a small town in Judah, was where Yeshua was born. This shows that God’s plan was at work long before His birth.

In Revelation 5:5, Yeshua is called the “Lion of the Tribe of Judah.” Lions are symbols of strength, authority, and leadership. This perfectly describes Yeshua, who came as the ultimate ruler and Savior.

The genealogies in Matthew 1:1-16 and Luke 3:23-38 trace Yeshua’s family back to King David, showing His descent from Judah. This fulfills the prophecy that the Messiah would come from David’s line, proving Yeshua’s rightful claim to the throne of Israel.
